Bulat, M., Krakow's Jewish Theatre

Mirosława M. Bułat, Krakowski Teatr Żydowski. Krokewer Jidisz teater: Między szundem a sztuką [Kraków’s Jewish Theater: Between Gutter and Art]. Kraków: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, 2006.

Mirosława Bułat’s book is above all an academic work on the history of the theater and the people who created it. Nevertheless, it also discusses the social, political and cultural conditions in which its theatrical art came into being.

Thus one can see great community activists, artists, the Jewish theater-going public and attempts to break down the barrier between Yiddish and Polish Kraków. The author discusses specific plays and their reception, as well as the difficulties that the institution faced – stemming both from a lack of understanding for Jewish culture among the Polish elite in Kraków, as well as from Jewish assimilationist and Orthodox circles.
One great aspect of this work is its unusually extensive bibliography (fourteen pages!) and its author’s use of very many Yiddish-language archival materials – enabling her to delve further into a subject that up to now has usually been treated very superficially. As a result, the book is brimming with interesting tidbits and anecdotes. A large number of biographical notes adds to this work’s value in terms of research that has been done on the world of culture and art in Kraków.

The book includes a glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms, as well as indexes of names, cryptonyms, pseudonyms, plays and films.
