Gnatowski M.(pub.), Jews and Polish-Jewish Relations in the Lomza Region during the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: Studies and Materials

Łomża, 2002.

This publication is the first volume in the series Poles and Jews and the Łomża Region, whose editorial board includes Michał Gnatowski, Adam Dobroński, Jacek Kocoń, Witold Jemielity and Zbigniew Romaniuk. The publisher is the Łomżyńskie Towarzystwo Naukowe im. Wagów, which had financial support from the Committee for Scholarly Research and the Council for the Protection of the Memory of Wars and Suffering (Rada Ochrony Pamięci Walk i Męczeństwa).

The idea for this series came about after a successful scholarly conference titled "Polish-Jewish Relations in the Łomża Region during the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries", which was organized by the Łomżyńskie Towarzystwo Naukowe im. Wagów in 2001. At the conference, an attempt was made to summarize the current state of research and indicate areas where further study was necessary. The event garnered a great deal of interest and inspired further collaboration among its participants.
The first volume opens with the following motto: "The truth about Poles and Jews who lived alongside each other and who were both subject to the impact of various totalitarianisms is part of the universal truth about the fate of man." (K. Kersten, J. Shapiro, from a paper given at a conference titled "The History and Culture of the Polish Jews", which was held in Jerusalem in 1988). This indicates the importance of addressing these questions, and their universal and not merely local significance.

The publication is divided into three main chapters: Sources and Current State of Research (containing texts by Janusz Szczepański, Siergiej Piwowarczyk and Zbigniew Romaniuk); Polish-Jewish Relations (containing texts by Jarosław Wołkonowski and Daniel Boćkowski) ; and Jews and Polish-Jewish Relations in the Łomża Region (containing texts by Leszek Kocoń, Małgorzata Dajnowicz, Wiesława Szymańska, Janusz Gwardiak, Janusz Gołota and Michał Gnatowski).

The study presents history based on these documents and other surviving sources, without engaging in polemics. For the average reader, the lack of an index and no explanation of abbreviations may pose a problem, though perhaps they will be included in future volumes. (asw)
