David Ben-Gurion

David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973)

Born as David Gruen in Płońsk, Poland. Israeli politician, left-wing Zionist activist, first Israeli prime minister. He co-founded the Poalei Zion party in Poland and emigrated to Israel in 1906. From 1910 to 1918, he organized the Jewish Legion in the USA.
In the 1930's, Ben-Gurion headed the Histadrut (General Federation of Laborers in the Land of Israel). From 1935, he was part of the leadership of the World Zionist Organization, of which he also became chairman. He was prime minister of Israel twice, during the years 1946-53 and 1955-1963.
