Viridarium

Viridarium - Polish Students Group against anti-semitism and xenophobia.

Formed in 2001 operates alongside with the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in Poland and The Open Republic - Association Against Anti-Semitism And Xenophobia.

The Group works on the ground of antisemtism and xenophobia to make the public aware of the crucial problems of contemporary multicultural society. Consequently, lectures and meetings with distinguished Polish publicists, journalist and scholars are organized to familiarize the public with the issues of human rights and the relations between nations, cultures and religions coexisting in Poland and Europe. In addition informative actions are held by means of leaflets, posters etc. and on the Internet (website, emailing).

The main website that contains basic information (in Polish) about th Group's activities is http://wirydarz.org. In addition http://swiadomy.prv.pl provides reports and photos of informative actions accomplished by the Group.

So far Viridarium has commemorated the anniversaries of: the Cristal Night, the proclamation of the Common Declaration of Human Rights, the Uprising in Warsaw Ghetto, the massacres in Srebrenica and Jedwabne. The last two actions mentioned were combined with outdoor art installations entitled: "The Tree of the Names" and "The Signs of the Memory" and gained attention of the Polish press.

on the internet

Viridarium website.
The most current project that is being realized in the Internet: "NO! to the Hate on the Internet" began on the International Day Against Fascism and Anti-Semitism. It gained popularity and will be developed in the nearest future. The main idea of the project is to monitor Polish websites and track down those which popularize intolerance and hatred. The Group strains to persuade proper Internet administrators to block those websites and make them aware of this issue.

Wirydarz seeks contact with similar groups and individuals in Poland and abroad. Send E-mail, make a date, see something in Warsaw with us, send us a book or useful information or a paper of interest for us. Being students we need sponsors to help develop our activities (buy material for installations, buy books, visit relevant places outside Warsaw, organize more systematic training for more participants).
