TRACES OF THE PAST

Podlasie Region

Podlasie is situated between the pre-war frontier territories of Poland, with their famous centre in Vilna, and the Mazowsze and Lublin regions, each with alarge Jewish population. In Podlasie the only Jewish centre of considerable size (though established somewhat later) was Bialystok, the capital of the region. The importance of Tykocin should also be borne in mind. In the other towns of Podlasie, the Jewish communities were relatively small. The region was passed over by major historical events and the expansion of chasidism was limited. Chasidic houses of prayer, called kloyzn, were usually to be found in people's homes as the movement had few supporters.

Before 1939 local examples of Jewish culture were mostly limited to provincial cemeteries and wooden synagogues, which, being easy to destroy, did not survive the war.
